3 ways to practice self-care over the holiday season

In this article, I offer 3 ways to make the most of the holidays and get the best rest

It is easy to get caught up in the excitement of the holidays. Suddenly you find yourself with ‘Christmas fatigue’.  I think we should embrace any opportunity for a rest and fun but not at a personal cost.

You want to feel rested and satisfied after the holiday season; not drained and spent.  Here are 3 tips:

1)     Make a ‘Jan plan’

The January fear creeps up fast as the New Year approaches, but you can alleviate the dread by planning something that brings some anticipation. It doesn’t have to be indulgent or expensive, just something for you.

You could pick a theme for the month and do fun things that centre on it. It really depends what you like. For example, if you LOVE coffee, you could try out new coffee shops. If creativity is your theme, you can find different ways to be creative throughout the month.

2)     Embrace ‘the feeling you get after spending time in nature’

It is so easy for tensions to run a bit higher at this time of year. You know that point when you have just spent too much time with people or maybe even too much time alone.

Take a breather, literally.

In a recent workshop, I asked all the participants what made them happy. One woman said she loved ‘the feeling you get after spending time in nature’.

Getting out into nature and fresh air regularly will help you clear your mind and feel more connected.

3)     How will you remember to appreciate the happiness around you?

I get it! It is a rush. You have to go here, get this, do that, and meet this person! The break is often over before you know it. It is easy to bypass the little moments. Savouring the moment and noticing the everyday joys leads to more satisfaction. Actively try to be present, notice and savour the nice things.

But…… I am sure you have read about counting your blessings before and probably know the benefits.

So really the question ishow will you remember to embrace the present and appreciate the happiness around you?’

Here are some ideas that others have used.

·        Create a ritual

·        Set a reminder

·        Spend time with animals or children

·        Actively spend time away from your phone.
