4 ways to clear the noise from your mind
Here are some ways to clear the noise from your mind (without throwing away your smartphone)
There is so much noise the moment– content, emails, phone notifications, priorities, it can be difficult to feel connected and in the moment.
Remember when you had a nokia 5110?
All you had were calls, texts and probably a bit more confidence and peace.
Here are 4 ways to feel more connected:
Number one: A regular practice
Some people exercise or meditate; others might get their nails done. You might call it ‘checking in with the universe’ or it could be simply going for a walk. It is completely up to you. The main ingredients of a regular practice is something that:
1) takes you mentally away from the constant churning noise
2) puts you in a new positive context or environment
3) keeps you in engaged or occupied in some way
A regular dose of something that gives you peace will provide with some ‘mental insurance’ against the noise.
Number two: Human connection
We need other people. Being around others has a calming effect on the mind (mostly!!). Search for opportunities to connect with others in person but be wise in how you approach this.
Your personality will define your version of connection. Types that are more outgoing will love attending big groups events and the buzz of socializing. Introverts will thrive on one on one conversation and connection. Perhaps you are somewhere in between?
It is about finding the type of connection that suits you and consistently seeking it out.
Number three: Loving kindness
This one splits the crowd. The self-love people will embrace it, the skeptics might think “sounds good but not for me!” Practicing loving kindness is simple in theory. You cultivate the feelings of kindness within yourself and give yourself a break.
You see ‘Always be kind’ or ‘love yourself’ written on mugs, t-shirts and instragram posts and fully commit to the idea. But when things get noisy or chaotic it is challenging to feel kindness towards yourself.
It seems more acceptable to have these feelings for others (kids, pets or loved ones).
Regularly practicing loving kindness meditation can help you develop a ‘kindness muscle’ to foster a greater sense of ease and peace within yourself.
Number four: Let go – or as the Beatles say ‘let it be’
When it comes to solving a problem, it is easy pay attention to the never-ending thoughts. The logical mind feeds itself, continuing on an endless loop.
I had a moment like this last year. I was sitting in the car ‘trying to figure something out’. Eventually I gave up and said ‘universe – send me a sign’. I started the car and ‘Let it be’ by the Beatles came on the radio.
Deciding to ‘let it be’ is often a good solution to a problem. The key to letting go is to start with small issues initially and eventually when you really need to, letting go will be easier.
A simple summary…
Regularly doing something that gives you peace will provide you with some ‘mental insurance’ against the noise.
Be kind to yourself – really. You can learn how and develop a kindness muscle.
Let it be – but start small
Be around people and connect in your own way.
